BlazBlue Entropy Effect is a Refreshing and Flashy Roguelite

When I first came across this game, I initially wrote it off because I had assumed it was a traditional online fighting game like the previous BlazBlue titles. Whether it’s due to bad marketing, or simply my ignorance, I missed out on the Early Access version of the game. However, after finally picking this up for its 1.0 release, this game has phenomenal art, a good soundtrack, and a fun gameplay loop.

Story

I will keep this section brief because it is the weakest part of the game in my opinion. This game suffers from the same detriment that Neon White has, phenomenal gameplay, with boring dialogue in between. I have spent all my time spamming ‘F’ to skip through the dialogue. To me it simply isn’t worth the time when the gameplay was so much more fun, and therefore I have no additional comments about the story.

Gameplay

This is where BlazBlue Entropy Effect shines, it has a stellar gameplay loop with snappy reactions and a beautiful range of flashy effects. The game is a roguelite, so each run you start fresh with a character of your choice alongside some extra bonuses the more you progress.

There are a total of 10 characters, each with their own unique skills, pros, and cons. All the ones I have played have felt unique and you even get the bonus of bringing characters from previous runs into new ones with a Marvel vs Capcom like ally system.

A downside of the gameplay is that I found it to be a bit too easy sometimes, completing my first run on my third attempt, but this may change because there are systems I haven’t yet unlocked (lambda?).

Multiplayer

BlazBlue Entropy Effect also has multiplayer. It has a mode like the traditional one, except you can queue in by yourself or with a friend, and fight against other players during it. Bear in mind, despite its ‘Online Co-Op’ tag on Steam, you will always have to fight against other players, so it will be PvPvE, which is a disappointment to some.

Conclusion

Overall, this game is well worth it at a low cost of only $20. With extensive multiplayer and a replayable gameplay experience, you will spend many hours playing like I have.
