Why smart devices struggle to connect in garages often comes down to the path between the router and the device. Garages usually sit near the edge of a home’s wireless coverage, where distance and construction materials can weaken the signal.
Distance Weakens the Signal
Most routers sit in a living room, office, or another central part of the home. A garage is usually farther away, with one or more walls separating it from the router.
Wireless signals lose strength as they travel. A fast internet plan may deliver excellent service inside the house while still leaving the garage with spotty coverage. When a device sits near the edge of the network, even a slight change in placement can affect how quickly it responds.
Garage Materials Disrupt the Signal
Garages are built differently from most interior rooms. Exterior walls and fire-rated barriers can make it harder for a wireless signal to pass through.

Before replacing the hardware, test the connection where the device is actually installed. Compare its performance with the garage door open and closed. Then move the router or a network node temporarily to see whether the connection improves.
It also helps to check which Wi-Fi band the device supports. Many smart-home products use 2.4 GHz because it generally reaches farther than higher-frequency bands. A device may struggle if the network makes that band difficult to access.
