Rules of Engagement: The Grey State Release Date Planned for 2026

Today, we are looking at the upcoming release of Rules of Engagement: The Grey State from Grey State Studio, formerly known as Aurora Studio, a Shanghai-based game development studio established by Tencent Games, also known for the battle royale game Ring of Elysium and the Moonlight Blade.

Rules of Engagement: The Grey State will be a first-person tactical extraction shooter set in a horror universe, released in 2026 as a free-to-play PC game with a mix of horror and intense PvE and PvP gameplay. It takes place in a newly discovered dimension with nightmarish creatures, where you will play as an elite soldier called Strider who is sent to Grey State to retrieve The Vertex, a priceless artifact. Your mission is to build, complete quests, level up, survive the nightmare, take out rival squads in this PvPvE (player versus player versus environment) shooter, and get paid. You can play it solo, in a duo, or in a trio.

Combat, Mechanics, and the Elements

The game focuses on tactical combat and extraction mechanics, but will also use new PvE elements, leaving you fighting against environmental threats and alongside players with three different classes and progression skill trees. You will begin with only a basic loadout, and the rush is on to hunt grotesque creatures, loot gear, and prepare yourself for phase 2 before the time runs out.

During the showdown, phase 2, the final countdown begins: you can leave early at a personal exfil point and collect your payday, or risk it all to hunt for The Vertex and battle for a seat on the helicopter. The choice will be yours, and it promises that no runs will feel exactly the same. And with its infinite possibilities for future expansion, whether it be monsters, maps, classes, or cosmetics, the game could continue to grow and evolve.

At launch, three classes are planned, with additional classes to follow. The current classes will be Sledge, Pyro, and Phantom. Sledge will have a shield and a hammer, Pyro will have fire and gas, and Phantom, who is a swift assassin.

The game will be free-to-play, with in-game cosmetic purchases such as skins and battle passes, without any pay-to-win monetization options. So if you want better gear, you will have to earn it through gameplay. It will be available on Steam, Epic, and WeGame in China.

There is no official release date yet, but alpha playtests are planned for 2026 before the PC release, and it’s unknown at this time whether it will be available on PS5 and Xbox.

The Rules of Engagement: The Grey State will hopefully be a fresh, free-to-play extraction shooter that players will be eager to dive into, and could be one of 2026’s most anticipated releases.
