The DESOON 18-inch Electric Garden Tiller Review

The DESOON 18-inch electric garden tiller is an excellent option for homeowners who want serious cultivating power without all of the maintenance, fumes, and noise of a gas-powered tiller. With a 15-amp (1800W) corded motor, six steel tines, an 8.6-inch tilling depth, and an 18-inch working width, it is designed for small to even large-sized garden beds, raised garden beds or flower beds, lawn renovations, or seasonal soil preparation.

The tiller comes with a pair of gloves, safety glasses, and the operation manual. Pretty much everything you need to get started.

The performance of the DESOON electric garden tiller

The 15-amp/1800W motor gives this tiller more power than many smaller electric tillers on the market. The motor spins the tines at up to 320 RPM, allowing it to break up compacted garden soil, mix in compost, and cut through light roots and overgrowth more effectively than some lower-powered options.

As long as the area is not a compact space, the 18-inch tilling width is especially useful when preparing a vegetable garden or even making a larger area. It covers more ground per pass than a narrow cultivator, saving time and manual labor in the long run. The 8.6-inch tilling depth is also practical for most home gardening tasks, including loosening soil before planting, mixing, or aerating existing soil.

I gave my first test on a smaller planting bed for some tomatoes. The 18-inch width makes it a bit more aggressive than a compact one would be, and it required a bit more control on my part in the tight space. So, for narrow raised beds, small flower borders, or working between established plants, a smaller tiller may be easier to maneuver. So overall, for smaller areas, the 18-inch tilling width isn’t as beneficial as it is for larger areas.

I also used it after some rain on the previous day. So under those conditions, this tiller outperformed my expectations.

With that said, while it is powerful for an electric tiller, it is probably best suited for residential use. I expect extremely rocky ground, heavy clay areas, roots, or previously untilled areas will most likely require more passes than a heavier gas-powered tiller would.

Ease of use

One of the biggest advantages of the DESOON tiller is convenience. Since it is corded electric, there is no gas, oil, spark plug, carburetor, or seasonal tune-up to worry about. You plug it in and start working. But the cord is short, so you are required to use an extension cord.

The 3-position adjustable rear wheels are a useful feature. Lowering the wheels makes it easier to move the tiller across patios, driveways, or lawns, while raising them allows the tines to dig deeper into the soil. This makes the machine more flexible for both shallow and deeper cultivating.

The dual-grip ergonomic handles are another plus. Electric tillers can bounce and pull when they hit dense soil. Plus, you can easily disassemble it for storage if you have limited space in your garage or shed.

Corded Design: Pros and Cons

Unfortunately, the corded design becomes both a strength and a limitation with this tiller. On the positive side, corded electric power means consistent performance without battery charging or gas, and it is quieter and cleaner than gas.

However, you will need a suitable outdoor extension cord, and your working range depends on access to an outlet and the cord length. For small to medium yards, this is simple and manageable. But for large properties or remote garden areas, the cord can be inconvenient, and you also have to be very mindful to keep it away from the tiller while in use.

Best uses

This tiller is best for:

  • Preparing vegetable gardens
  • Loosening compacted garden soil
  • Mixing compost, fertilizer, or mulch into beds
  • Refreshing raised beds
  • Breaking up old lawn areas for reseeding
  • Seasonal garden maintenance
  • Light-to-moderate landscaping projects

It is less ideal for:

  • Very rocky soil
  • Thick tree roots
  • Large farm plots
  • Deep new-ground-breaking
  • Areas far from an electrical outlet

Pros

  • Powerful 15-amp motor
  • Wide 18-inch tilling path
  • Good 8.6-inch tilling depth
  • Six steel tines for effective soil cutting
  • No gas, oil, or engine maintenance
  • Adjustable rear wheels for transport and depth control
  • Quieter and cleaner than gas tillers

Cons

  • Requires access to an outdoor power outlet and an extension cord (not included)
  • Extension cord management is necessary and could be a hassle in larger areas
  • May struggle with very rocky, root-heavy, or extremely compacted soil
  • A wider tilling width may be less convenient in tight spaces
  • Not as heavy-duty as a gas rear-tine tiller for major land breaking

So, what is the final verdict?

The DESOON 18-inch 15-amp electric garden tiller looks like a capable and convenient option for homeowners who need more power than a small cultivator but do not want the maintenance of a gas tiller. Its 18-inch-wide cutting path, powerful motor, adjustable wheels, and foldable handle make it practical for garden preparation, raised beds, lawn renovation, and compost mixing. For extremely tough, rocky, or undeveloped ground, you may need something heavier, but for most home gardening jobs, the DESOON offers a strong balance of power, convenience, and ease of use.
