Tesla is the most searched car brand in the USA two years running as EV revolution takes hold

  • Tesla keeps its position as America’s number one car brand in online searches two years in a row, according to Compare the Market
  • Ford stayed in second place after being number one until 2023
  • Toyota was third in the USA but number one globally, but Tesla is closing the gap, with Tesla predicted to take over as early as 2031

Tesla has maintained the top spot as America’s most searched car brand two years in a row, according to the latest annual report from Compare the Market AU.

Data from Compare the Market’s Most Searched Cars 2024 report shows Tesla has kept pole position in the US after deposing Ford in 2023.

Ford is still the second-most searched brand in America, while Toyota maintained third place on the podium.

Tesla’s online popularity was boosted this year after revealing a suite of autonomous concepts such as the Cybercab and Robovan, as well as a slick robot named Optimus.

Tesla did well across the world too, coming in second place once again. While Toyota has been the number one car brand globally four years in a row, Tesla has continued to grow in popularity, being the most searched brand in 34 countries compared to 29 countries in 2023.

While Toyota was number one at 64 countries, Tesla is narrowing the gap. Based on the last few years of data, it’s possible that Tesla will replace Toyota as the world’s most searched car brand in 2031.

BYD surged into the rankings for the first-ever time, off the back of its top-selling EVs taking the globe by storm. The Chinese electric and hybrid manufacturer was the most searched brand in two countries – Uzbekistan and Nepal.

Meanwhile, Lexus and Volvo were completely knocked off the rankings in 2024, while Ford made a return after previously being booted from the list in 2022.

Compare the Market’s General Manager of General Insurance, Adrian Taylor, notes that car insurance is important no matter what you drive.

“Car insurance is a financial safety net that can cover you against a range of events. Depending on the level of cover you purchase, if your car is damaged your insurer could repair or replace your car, or provide a cash settlement for your claim. It can also cover your legal liability if you damage the property of others while driving,” Mr Taylor said.

Regardless of what your day-to-day car is, Taylor added it’s crucial you look at the limits, exclusions and policy details in the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) before you buy.

“Not all policies are the same, and insurers may have differing levels of cover, terms, exclusions and more. It’s essential to read the policy wording so you don’t wind up with unsuitable cover for your needs.”
