PS5 Slim Review: Elevating Gaming Excellence with a Sleek Design

The PS5 Slim fulfills our initial wishes for a console that enhances an already outstanding gaming experience. With a thinner and lighter build, coupled with a more modular design, it preserves the rapid performance and quick load times that define its predecessor. This system emerges as an exceptional choice for enjoying a diverse range of PS5 and PS4 games.

PS5 Slim Price:

  • Standard edition: $499
  • Digital Edition: $449

Pros:

  • Modular design
  • Slimmer and lighter build
  • Superb performance
  • Extensive game library

Cons:

  • Vertical stand sold separately for $30

The PS5, acknowledged for its raw power and extensive game library, has been critiqued for its substantial size. Enter the PS5 Slim, stepping in to replace its bulky predecessor.

As anticipated, the PS5 Slim is noticeably smaller and lighter, enhancing its storage manageability. The redesigned modular console simplifies SSD drive replacement and faceplate removal, even allowing for the attachment and detachment of the optical disc drive. While a separate $30 stand is necessary for optimal vertical stability, the PS5 Slim offers expanded storage capacity.

Beyond its redesigned exterior, the PS5 Slim maintains the outstanding performance, user-friendly interface, and impressive game library of the original PS5. Existing PS5 owners may find little reason to upgrade, given the functional similarities between the two systems. However, for those considering Sony’s console, the slim model provides an ideal entry point to experience the best of PS5 gaming.

The PS5 Slim, equipped with a 4K Blu-ray disc drive, is priced at $499 and includes a choice of either Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Alternatively, the PS5 Slim Digital Edition is available for $449 without bundled games at the time of this review.

For horizontal placement, two transparent plastic feet are included in the box. However, the new vertical stand, also compatible with the older PS5, requires a separate $30 purchase.

PS5 Slim Review: Design – Thinner and Lighter, Modular Design

While retaining the basic shape, the PS5 Slim’s thinner profile is visually more appealing and convenient to place behind a TV. Featuring four faceplates (two at the bottom and two on top) instead of two, the system’s polished faceplates and black body contribute to its aesthetic appeal.

The front of the system showcases a pair of USB-C ports and a white eject button beside the disc drive. The back includes two USB-A ports and an Ethernet port, with a preference for a front USB-A port for wired peripherals.

The system’s “bottom” is bulkier due to the disc drive, but attaching the included transparent feet stabilizes it for horizontal placement. The lack of a bundled vertical stand is a drawback, and while the PS5 Slim is flatter, a separate stand is recommended for vertical stability.

Removing the optical disc drive is simple but leaves a noticeable gap in the faceplate designed for the drive slot, making it an unconventional choice for those not opting for a disc-less experience.

PS5 Slim Review: Performance – Impressive Performance and Fast Load Times

With minimal changes from the older model, the PS5 Slim continues to impress with excellent performance and fast load times. The inclusion of a larger 1TB SSD ensures it remains one of the most powerful gaming consoles available.

PS5 Slim Review: Verdict

The PS5 Slim stands as a commendable update to Sony’s beloved console. Retaining its phenomenal attributes—swift performance, ray-tracing, and an extensive game library—it proves to be an excellent choice for both current and new PlayStation enthusiasts. While existing PS5 owners may not find it imperative to upgrade, the PS5 Slim presents a compelling option for those new to PlayStation or still enjoying their PS4.
