Canon Launches Its First Two Serious Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras

After nearly two full calendar years of anticipation, Canon is at last putting out its first “serious” attempt at a professional-grade mirrorless camera. In this instance, that means a full-frame mirrorless camera utilizing the company’s novel RF mount. And to make matters more interesting, the online-only product event that took place earlier today actually saw Canon announce two such solutions in the EOS R5 and EOS R6.

Whether that will make up for the long wait will depend on how well these devices ultimately perform in their respective price categories. Speaking of which, the EOS R5 will retail at $3,899 in the United States, or a cent under five grand if you want to buy it with an RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM kit lens. Note that this is one of Canon’s RF lenses, so its specs do not really tell the whole story, as its performance is pretty awe-inspiring altogether.

As for the EOS R6, it will start at $2,699 for just the body, but while the EOS R5 will hit the U.S. in late August, its slightly less capable peer won’t be out before mid-September. Canon also intends to sell the EOS R6 alongside its new telephoto primers in the RF 600mm f/11 IS STM, and the RF 800mm f/11 IS STM, priced at around $700 and $900, respectively.
