The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus 5G is one mouthful of a name, but also one befitting the most powerful chipset for smartphones and tablets that ever made its way to mass production. Announced just earlier today, this newest chip offering from Qualcomm will make its way into globally available Android smartphones in the months ahead, starting in either late summer or early fall.
As for tablets, those probably won’t be as quick to embrace this latest and greatest chip from Qualcomm, assuming they ever get around to doing so. This updated version of the Snapdragon 865 seeks to add even more 5G interoperability and AI-conducive solutions to the best – but also most expensive – consumer mobile devices on the market. It’s not an entirely new generation of mobile chips, mind you, so it probably won’t be as widespread as the original Snapdragon 865 which already powers nearly 140 commercially available smartphones.
But expect at least some devices from the likes of Samsung and LG to adopt this new chip in the fourth quarter of the year. Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 865 Plus has been specifically optimized for premium mobile gaming experiences, which these days primarily means triple-digit frame rates displayed through 120Hz screens and such.
