Plain black cases are so boring! How about a case for your iPhone 5 that came about as a result of a work of art? Even better, how about a case for your iPhone 5 that case about as a result of a work of art created by a world-renowned Australian Aboriginal artist?
Sounds cool doesn’t it? I certainly thought so when I had to the chance to preview a new line of cases for the iPhone 5 from Cygnett while at CES 2013. The ICON series, which consists of different, speciality designed cases, each featuring an artistic theme, is both original and eye catching.

Inside the packaging you’ll find the case along with a clear, front facing screen shield for your iPhone 5, an installation card and small micro fiber cloth.
Here’s what Cygnett has to say about the ICON – Rain Making Case for iPhone 5.
World-famous Ronnie Tjampitjinpa of Papunya Tula Artists is a grand master of the Australian Indigenous Western Desert Art movement. Artwork steeped in Aboriginal dreamtime adorns the hard, slim case and includes a screen protector.
The ICON case is a simple snap on the back style case. As with all snap on the back style cases I recommend using a screen protector as this type of case doesn’t offer much in the way of lay on the table protection.

Installation involves placing your phone into the case, button side first. The inside is lined with soft touch material so the back of your phone will be safe and sound inside the case.
Then snap the other side in. If you’re using any sort of side protection or back protection on your iPhone 5 you’ll probably want to remove it before installing this case to insure the best fit possible. It’s a tight fit, and that’s a good thing. You phone doesn’t move around, there’s no creaking and I never once felt my phone might come out of the case unexpectedly.
Once installed the case still yields access to all of the iPhone’s ports and controls. Since this is a snap on the back style case both the top and the bottom of the phone are left totally open.
The case features a soft touch finish which feels very good when you’re holding it. It’s nice and grippy.
The inside of the case features a little bit of the story behind the case and offers you a QR code to scan. When you scan the code with your QR code reader of choice you’re taken to a special web site which Cygnett has developed to showcase Ronnie Tjampitjinpa’s work. You’ll find a bio about him and a short explanation about that particular work of art which inspired each of the ICON series cases Ronnie has done.
According to the site this particular design, “Rain Making”, is based on the original artwork, ‘Rain Making At Malparingya’, depicting body paint designs associated with rain making ceremonies at the site of Malparingya, slightly south east of Wilkinkarra.
If you’re looking for an iPhone 5 case that’s original, something other than a plain, solid color case and want something that’s constructed well, you’ll want to check out the ICON series line of cases from Cygnett. I’m always on the look out for a case that’s just “different.” A case that I wouldn’t expect to see someone else using if I say, wandered the streets of NYC for a few hours. The ICON – Rain Making case not only looks and feels good but perhaps more importantly, the case has a story behind it.
